The Barito River exists not only in its physical form, but also in the many meanings it possesses for the Bakumpai culture residing along the river. Empirically, this can be seen from the Bakumpai’s knowledge and experience on establishing orientation based on the flow of river. The Bakumpai have four directions: ngaju (upper course of the river), ngawa (lower course of the river), ngambu (land), and liwa (sea).
